Your resume foundation: How to write a clear, impactful CV
Ultimate Job Search Guide · Part 5.3
Even in 2025, resumes still matter. You may have a strong online presence, but still, many recruiters and hiring managers will ask for a CV they can upload to an ATS, share internally, and scan fast.
That first scan is often 20–40 seconds. If your CV is long, generic, or hard to read, they move on. If it’s clear and proof-driven, it becomes your door opener.
This chapter shows you how to build that kind of CV: role-aware, ATS-friendly, credible, and easy to scan.
Different resumes for different roles
Focus your CV on what your profession values most.
| Role type | What matters most | Resume focus |
|---|---|---|
| Creative / Brand / Design | Style, storytelling, portfolio links | Clean but appealing layout. Link Behance/Dribbble. Highlight 2–3 projects with context + outcomes. |
| Data-driven (analyst, finance, science) | Clarity, numbers, tools | Show metrics (e.g., “reduced churn by 12%”). List tools (SQL, Python, Tableau). 2–3 analysis projects. |
| Project / Program Management | Structure, leadership, delivery | Logical layout. Cross-team collaboration + results. Include scope, timelines, risks mitigated. |
| Developers / Engineers | Tech stack, projects, outcomes | Languages/frameworks, GitHub links. Contributions to codebases. Bullets with measurable results. |
| Business / Sales / Operations | Results, growth, scale | Revenue, efficiency, market impact. Add context tags (industry, stage, model) for relevance. |
👉 Ask yourself: What does my profession value most—design, data, structure, projects, or growth? Make sure your CV reflects that priority.
Resume hygiene factors — the must-haves
These make any CV searchable and trustworthy:
- Contact info: name, email, phone, location (city/country), links (LinkedIn, HiCareer, portfolio).
- Summary (3–4 lines): who you are, what you bring, where you’re heading.
- Experience (reverse-chronological):
- Title, company, dates.
- Context tags: industry · stage (startup/scaleup/enterprise) · business model (SaaS, marketplace, etc.).
- 2–3 project/outcome bullets per role.
- Skills (10–15 focused): tools, methods, domains aligned to your target roles.
- Education & certifications: concise and relevant.
- Format: PDF, simple fonts, ATS-friendly layout, accessible file name (e.g.,
Name_Lastname_CV_2025.pdf).
Smart additions that strengthen a CV
Small, credible signals make skimming easier and build trust.
- Short quotes (social proof): 1-2 lines from a manager/past colleague.
“Sara brings clarity under pressure and helped us set up amazing onboarding processes - from scratch.” — Head of Product
- Context tags:
“Ops Manager — Logistics | Scaleup | Marketplace” - Subtle logos: small, monochrome company logos can aid recognition.
- Keyword highlights: bold key results, tools, or role terms.
“Improved activation +15% using SQL and Python automation.”
How recruiters actually read a CV
- Filtering & search: ATS/LinkedIn/HiCareer filters by titles, skills, tools, industries, locations. If the words aren’t there, you won’t appear.
- Top section: name, informal yet straight-forward summary, most recent role. Question in their head: “Is this relevant enough to move through?”
- Experience bullets: quick scan for industry match, relevant projects, and outcomes that align.
- Trust signals: recognizable companies, strong keywords, project examples, social proof, clean layout.
How to help them say “yes”:
- Put your most relevant skills/results high on page 1.
- Write bullets as Action → Context → Outcome.
- “Redesigned onboarding flow → activation +15%.”
- “Built SQL pipeline → reporting time −70%.”
- Use white space; avoid dense blocks of text.
But also - don't forget to add a personal touch so it doesn't look too mainstream.
Writing proof-driven bullets (fast templates)
Use one of these structures:
- Fix / Build / Improve:
“Built Tableau dashboards for sales → forecast accuracy +9%.” - From–To change:
“Cut manual reporting from 2 days to 30 minutes with Python automation.” - Problem–Action–Result:
“Churn rising in SMB segment → launched retention playbook → churn −10% in 90 days.” - Scale & scope:
“Managed €1.2M budget across 5 markets → CPL −22%.”
These are just a couple of examples. Again add some personal touch so it doesn't feel too AI generic.
ATS-friendly layout (one-page skeleton)
Copy and adapt:
Name Lastname City, Country · email@email.com · +46 700 000 000 · LinkedIn / HiCareer · Portfolio/GitHub
SUMMARY Role + years + strengths + direction. One sentence on domain/industry. One on impact.
CORE SKILLS Tools · Methods · Domains · (10–15 aligned to target roles)
EXPERIENCE Title — Company | Industry · Stage · Business Model | YYYY–YYYY • Project/Outcome bullet 1 (Action → Context → Outcome, numbers if possible) • Project/Outcome bullet 2 • Project/Outcome bullet 3 (optional) “Short quote for social proof.” — Name, Title
Title — Company | Industry · Stage · Business Model | YYYY–YYYY • Project/Outcome bullet 1 • Project/Outcome bullet 2
EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS Degree/Program — School | YYYY Selected certifications (relevant to target roles)
QUOTES AND/OR CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
Common mistakes (and gentle fixes)
| Mistake | Problem | Simple fix |
|---|---|---|
| Information overload | 4–5 dense pages | Keep to 1–2 pages. Focus last 10 years, 2–3 bullets per role. |
| Generic AI phrasing | “Results-driven professional with a proven track record” | Use AI to proofread, not to flatten your voice. Keep concrete examples. |
| One-size-fits-all CV | Same CV for every company | Tailor lightly: mirror keywords, reorder bullets, keep core the same. |
| No context | Titles with no industry/stage/model | Add context tags under each role. |
| Responsibilities only | “Responsible for campaigns” | Switch to results: “Launched 5 campaigns → +18% engagement.” |
| Wall of skills | 50+ skills unfocused | Keep 10–15 aligned to target roles. |
| Visual noise | Heavy graphics, columns breaking ATS | Use clean layout, simple fonts, PDF. |
Cultural nuance tip:
Adjust tone for the market. US resumes often reward confident, numbers-forward language. Nordic resumes often resonate with team impact, clarity, and modesty paired with solid outcomes.
Resume self-audit checklist
Score 0–2 on each, then sum your total.
| Factor | 0 = Missing | 1 = Needs work | 2 = Strong |

| Summary | Missing | Generic | Clear & specific |

| Growth | Flat | Small hints | Clear progression |
